Correspondence Lessons

Many people live in areas where it’s either difficult to find a good teacher or there are no teachers at all. And while there seems to be a lot of players offering online lessons these days, it usually amounts to just watching prerecorded videos and downloading the matching tablature. You can’t ask any specific questions that relate to your own personal musical interests, and they are not in a position to understand your strengths and weaknesses. The correspondence lessons I offer are an actual interaction, a relationship, not unlike with my local students, using whatever format makes the most sense; privately sharing recordings, questions, and written work via e-mail, or snail mail.

Although most of my gigs and recorded work are acoustic fingerstyle jazz, blues, and latin in style, I actually have a very electric background and varied interests. I have a lot of jazz students, but also plenty of rock, blues, funk, newgrass, contemporary fingerstyle acoustic students as well. I have many people playing pickstyle as well as fingerstyle, and electric players too.

As with my local students, common subjects discussed in lessons are improvisation, harmony, composition, technique, comping, etc. As well as tone production, and live and recorded sound tips. Sometimes students want to learn some of the tunes from my two CD’s, or custom transcriptions of their favorite artists. Students might also have questions about gear, musicianship, music history... it’s just like any other guitar lesson, we hit a bunch of different topics in each lesson based or your specific questions. Private Lessons In Portland

I also offer private lessons in a relaxed home office setting in beautiful Northeast Portland Oregon. I sometimes have openings for regular weekly lessons. For people traveling in the Pacific Northwest on business or vacation, arranging a one time longer private meeting is also possible.
